General Comments
The 2008 NZ election had two stand out parties from a climate point of view. These were the Green Party and the ACT Party.
Not surprisingly the Green Party had the strongest climate policies across all areas assessed, but like most Green parties around the world in 2008, the NZ Greens failed current and future generations and the ecosystems they depend on, by not showing leadership on this issue by proposing strong and fast enough emissions cuts and low enough climate stabilisation targets, in order to create a climate cooling which will then restore a number of key climate stabilisation systems, such as the North Pole Summer ice, and to prevent the further degradation of others.
Consequently the Green Party, with their current policies, will not prevent the continuation of global warming to catastrophic levels.
The other standout party was the ACT party who adopted an open climate climate change denial position.
On a general political issue the Labour Party, seemed not to want to win the election. Their website was tired, their policies were lacking detail and poorly written. The Nationals on the other hand had a slick website, which included professionally developed video, better presented policies and a sense they wanted to win.
